Speech and language disorders can affect how we communicate to others around us. When we have problems, we are misunderstood, isolated, sometimes exhibit negative behaviors from frustration. Speech disorders are seen when speech sounds are mispronounced. This can be because of improper oral mechanics not working succinctly due to negative habits, developmental delays, and/or anatomy issues, just to name a few possible problems. Speech therapy should be individualized to clients. One method does not fit all clients!
Nutrition is important and sometimes due to weak muscles, from pediatrics thru geriatric, patients experience difficulty with meals and medication intake. Children can have trouble eating for many different reasons, from the time they were born or problems that develop later on. Feeding problems happen when there is a problem getting food or liquid into the mouth to suck, shew, or swallow. Swallowing problems exist when a person can't control the food or liquid in their mouth and throat. Coughing, choking, running out of air and a runny nose while eating is often observed.
Orofacial myology is the study and treatment of oral and facial muscles patterns that interfere with the normal growth, development, or function of the orofacial structures. It relates to speech, dentition, chewing/bolus collection, swallowing, and overall mental and physical health. Problems that are often seen are:
Struggling with oral habits such as Thumb/Pacifier Sucking
Speech disorders
Cosmetic Problems caused by grimaces, muscle weakness/tightness
Dental problems: tongue thrust, incorrect resting posture of the tongue; difficulty with biting, chewing, swallowing, and digesting food.
Cognitive and neurological disorders can affect how we communicate to others around us. When we have problems, we are misunderstood, isolated, sometimes exhibit negative behaviors from frustration. We anticipate seeing neurological disorders as we age in the forms of dementia, Parkinson's Disease, and Alzheimer's Disease. But we often see neurological disorders with traumatic brain injuries from automobile/motorcycle accidents, sports injuries, falls, from use of drugs and alcohol as well.
Research shows that baby's have a developmental growth pattern in the womb. As such, when babies are born, they are expected to follow a normal developmental growth pattern. Sometimes this varies in a mild to severe developmental impairment. Areas of concern that we look at under the realm of speech therapy are oral facial tone, symmetry, and functioning to support feeding/nutrition, speech, and language. We often refer to other disciplines if we see other deficits with motor and sensory problems such as occupational and physical therapists.

Our son has had a few speech therapists. We never really knew what was wrong with him but Alisa was able to not only help him but show, explain, and gave us examples and information on what he needed us to do to work with him. She was ADAMANT that we had to put in our time at home with him and when we did, his progress started happening immediately. She is tough and passionate but she was great at giving structure and getting our Ayden fixed.
